Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Crater – Nature’s Grand Amphitheater

Experience the magic of Tanzania, where stunning landscapes, rich wildlife, and unforgettable adventures await in the heart of Africa.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and One of Africa’s Most Unique Safari Destinations

Located in northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a breathtaking blend of dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and ancient human history. At its heart lies the Ngorongoro Crater—the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on Earth.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area is where conservation and human habitation coexist in harmony. It’s also part of the Greater Serengeti ecosystem, making it a perfect addition to any northern Tanzania safari itinerary.

What Makes Ngorongoro Unique?

The Crater – A Natural Wonder

Formed around 2 to 3 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed in on itself, the Ngorongoro Crater stretches over 260 km² and plunges to a depth of about 600 meters. The result is a stunning, self-contained wildlife sanctuary—often referred to as Africa’s Garden of Eden.

Because of its enclosed geography, the crater supports an unusually high concentration of wildlife, including some of the densest populations of large mammals in Africa.

Wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater

Year-Round Game Viewing

The Ngorongoro Crater offers one of the best chances to see the Big Five in a single day. Wildlife is present year-round thanks to the permanent water and grazing in the crater floor.

Beyond the Crater – The Wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area extends far beyond the crater itself, covering over 8,000 km². This landscape includes volcanic highlands, ancient forests, grassy plains, and archaeological sites.

Key Highlights:

· Olduvai Gorge – Known as the "Cradle of Mankind," where early human fossils were discovered

· Empakaai and Olmoti Craters – Quieter volcanic features ideal for scenic hikes

· Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek – Seasonal migration hotspots between December and March

· Maasai villages – Visit traditional bomas and learn about the coexistence of people and wildlife

Note: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is unique in allowing sustainable human activity, mainly by the Maasai who continue to live and herd cattle in the region.

Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater

  • Dry Season (June–October)

  • Easiest wildlife spotting, good road conditions

  • Wet Season (November–May)

  • Lush scenery, calving season (especially around Ndutu)

The crater offers excellent game viewing year-round, though the dry season provides clearer conditions and a better chance to see predators.
