Rongai Route – “Tented Camps”

This route approaches the mountain from the dry northern side, making it less crowded and ideal for those who want a quieter, drier trek. It’s more gradual, making it suitable for beginners, with fantastic views of Mawenzi and the Kenyan plains.

  • Day 1: Hike through forests to Simba Camp (2,600m).

  • Day 2: Trek to Second Cave Camp (3,450m) via moorland.

  • Day 3: Ascend to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) with views of Mawenzi.

  • Day 4: Reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m) near Mawenzi Peak.

  • Day 5: Continue to Kibo Hut (4,700m), final summit base.

  • Day 6: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and descend to Horombo Hut (3,720m).

  • Day 7: Final descent to Marangu Gate (1,830m).
